"Everyday Life in a Materialized Urban Utopia."

A researcher at the Institute for Research on Social Reproduction and Integration (IVRIS) at the Faculty of Social Studies of the Masaryk University in Brno, Lucie Galčanová is currently working on her dissertation, ‘Social Consequences of the Process of Suburbanization’, a case study on three suburbs of Brno. She is also involved in the research project ‘Individualization of Lifestyle from an Environmental Perspective’. Her masters thesis explored the position of sociology graduates on the job market, and her undergraduate thesis in sociology was entitled ‘Pleasure Trip in the Shopping Mall?’. She has organized and/or taken part in numerous workshops and conferences.

Born in 1979, Barbora Vackovágraduated from the Sociology Department of Brno’s Masaryk University with a thesis entitled ‘Space and Power: the Urban Experience in the 19th Century’. Her doctoral studies are focused on utopian consciousness, utopias, and the relationship between material space and social order in ideal societies. She is also a researcher at the Institute for Research on Social Reproduction and Integration (IVRIS). In collaboration with Lucie Galčanová, she is developing a project entitled ‘Socio-Cultural Aspects of Residential Suburbanization’, while her project with Jitka Ressová entitled ‘Individual Approaches to Living in Standardized Housing Units’ explores ways of utilizing and individually reconstructing housing in the Baťa quarters of Zlín. She is the author of several publications.
